Access to Employment

Refugees and asylum seekers come to the UK from diverse cultural backgrounds and bring with them a wealth of knowledge, professional skills and experiences. However, all too often they are denied learning, development and career opportunities in the UK because either they do not have the necessary communication and language skills, or have not had the relevant training, need to re-qualify or simply lack relevant work experience.

The problems of unemployment in the New Deal area are well documented. The Index of Multiple Local Deprivation (2000) shows that the ward of Burngreave is in the bottom 1% in the UK in terms of unemployment, and in the bottom 2% in terms of income.

The project will tackle unemployment among refugees and asylum seekers requiring skills through voluntary work. Most of our existing clients/service users have low knowledge of the employment system and English education attainment.

Several organisations within Burngreave either have links or users who are refugee and asylum seekers but no one is dealing with employment related issues with the group.

The employment of 1 full-time Development Worker will do outreach into the community to identify the refugees/asylum seekers.

The development worker through outreach will identify barriers that exist which prevent the uptake of employment and through collaborative work with other partners, find means of addressing the problem.
