Environment Maintenance Team

An additional maintenance team for Burngreave to keep the streets and open spaces clean.

Improvement of Streetscene Maintenance Standards

The aim of the project is to improve the standards of streetscene maintenance within Burngreave. This includes reducing the amount of litter, detritus and flytipping on our streets, open spaces and parks. This is being done by providing extra resources to remove the rubbish, to carry out enforcement work (fine people who dump rubbish) and to encuorage people not to dump rubbish and drop litter.

The project funds additional street cleaners in the area and two Neighbourhood Environmental Action Teams (NEAT Teams). The NEAT Teams remove fly tipping, pick up litter, cut back overgrown vegetation, tidy up landscape areas/derelict sites and generally keep the area looking clean and tidy.

All the operatives in the NEAT teams live in the area and therefore this project has provided additional local employment.

An enforcement officer works in the area advising businesses and residents how to dispose of their rubbish and where necessary issuing fines for littering or dumping.

The team are currently working with schools on environmental education and a campaign is due to commence called ‘Bin it for Burngreave’ to encourage residents to keep Burngreave clean.

There are currently 9 additional members of the team.

When the project started, Burngreave was one of the dirtiest areas in the city with only 58% of the area clean. Now it is one of the cleanest areas with 86% of the area clean at any one time, and many landscape areas have also been improved.

The project is funded through the Environment Theme Group.

Operation times

The teams operate Monday to Friday with some work carried out on Saturday. Any requests for service can be made to the Street Force call centre on 0114 273 4567.
